FAQ
Q. Is ikuna a certified 501(c)3 non-profit organization?
A. Yes. IKUNA is an approved 501(c)3 organization since January 2019.
Q. doES IKUNA only work with pacific islander students?
A. As alumni of Oakland Unified schools, we understand the unique challenges Pacific Islander students face. As a result our original focus is rooted in our Pacific Islander students with a desire to expand into other parts of the world where there is a concentration of Pacific Islander communities. With that said, we will work with all students who are interested in our programs regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, etc and look forward to expanding our work to all students and communities.
Q. DOES IKUNA offer SPECIFIC PROGRAMS?
A. Yes.
We are currently working to improve literacy amongst Pacific Islander students K-5 in Oakland Unified schools. The program “Fananga” allows us to provide reading materials, read-along sessions and ensuring that students are receiving the care and attention they need in the classroom.
We recently announced our new program called “Wayfinder” which will help students in middle school find a sense of BELONGING. High school students will explore finding PURPOSE in their journey. Students will also receive guidance regarding the college going process, college prep, admissions, scholarships and the various steps that are necessary to successfully get accepted after high school. This content will be delivered in the form of workshops (virtual/in-person) and through social channels.
Q. DOES IKUNA PLAN ON EXPANDING TO OTHER AREAS?
A. Our current focus is in Oakland, CA. As we grow, we plan to expand our work into other cities located within the USA with goals to help throughout the world.
